Donors’ Corner: Keep calm and support Concordia!

Over the years, Concordia had partnered with many volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to caring for and providing for many orphaned and urban poor children that we serve. But faced with the global pandemic, volunteer activities altered to the new normal set-up, and means to provide for the orphanage were needed more than ever. In spite of that, it didn’t stop the community from giving and many reached out to help and volunteer for Concordia in any way they can. Many organized online activities and peer-to-peer fundraising for in-kind and monetary help were made.

Many individuals and groups continued their support through thick and thin. One of those whose passion to give and love never ceased was the British Women’s Association (BWA), which has been supporting the home since 2012. During the pandemic, they’ve shown their altruism and generosity by donating and volunteering to the children with one goal in mind. And now that the home is open for visitors once again, the members have been dedicated to organizing fun activities and spending their time with the children once a month. “BWA visits have resumed recently since the pandemic and we are thrilled to be spending time with each of the children and building relationships with them. We strive to make a positive impact on the lives of the children and to contribute to building stronger, healthier, and happier communities.”, said Ms. Jackie, a member of BWA.

Every month was a different experience for them, and the members certainly put the effort into making each activity unique like cupcake decorating, crafting crowns for valentines, and making paper lanterns for the Chinese New Year. Over time, the experience has been rewarding, as the children quickly become expectant of such a routine. Calling the members “Pretty ladies” who’d bring fun and educational ventures for them to do. “A highlight during a recent visit was the opportunity to teach Jessy how to ride his new bicycle. The delight on his face when he had mastered this skill was truly heartwarming. The children seem to enjoy the recent crafts we’ve done together with all of us being covered in green paint, glue, and glitter afterward” Shared Ms. Jackie, who taught Jessie how to ride a bike. Each adventure formed close bonds with the children, and each activity taught them that time spent with children is time never wasted.

Apart from volunteering, BWA remained committed to doing more for the children. They have been sending monthly in both in-kind and monetary support. As Ms. Jackie explained, “BWA believes that every child deserves a safe and stable home. By contributing monthly towards the basic needs of children through Concordia, we hope to improve the lives of these vulnerable children”. To receive such support means a lot for the orphanage. For each support, each person, and each donation the home receives meant that the people are achieving something great, and that greatness is immeasurable in the eyes of a child.
