Rising Above Challenges: The Urban Poor Story of Overcoming Adversity and Embracing Acceptance at Concordia

Clarence Erpres, a remarkable 16-year-old student, has faced numerous challenges throughout his life. Living with his single mother, two siblings, and a beloved grandmother, Clarence’s journey has been one of resilience, support, and the transformative power of education. His story is an inspiring testament to overcoming adversity, discovering self-worth, and finding a safe haven at Concordia—a program that has played a vital role in his personal and academic growth.

From an early age, Clarence stood out from his peers due to a physical difference. Born without his left arm, he often felt isolated from friends and family. He endured bullying and hurtful name-calling, such as “Putol,” and was subjected to insensitive gestures that mocked his physical appearance. These experiences made him feel like an outsider and led him to believe that his body limited him and prevented him from doing what others could. However, his grandmother became his source of strength, offering unwavering support and guidance while his mother worked multiple odd jobs to provide for the family. Despite his father’s absence from his life since infancy, Clarence found solace in the wisdom his grandmother imparted to him during those challenging times. “There were moments when I felt left out by other children in our community because of my physical differences,” Clarence recalled. “I remember my Lola telling me that if I couldn’t find a friend, she would be my friend. That stuck with me.”

When Clarence was 11 years old, his grandmother had to move to their relatives in Quezon City due to his mother’s multiple job and financial constraints. This separation was devastating, and Clarence deeply missed his grandmother’s presence. However, he discovered solace and a sense of belonging within the Concordia family. Introduced to the EAS program at 8 years old, he found a sense of belonging and a supportive community that embraced him for who he was. Through his experiences at Concordia, Clarence gained confidence in his abilities, shattered self-imposed limitations, and discovered new talents. “Being introduced to the EAS program provided me with a sense of belonging and an environment where I could adapt and make friends my age,” Clarence shared. He developed strong social skills and a love for the English language, relishing in the opportunity to participate in yearly youth camps and indulge in his passion for music.

Although he wasn’t particularly fond of the Sportsfest held at Concordia, he discovered his love for playing badminton. Moreover, Clarence found his passion for writing and music, assuming the role of feature editor for his school’s journalism team and reveling in his language subjects.

With the unwavering support of his grandmother and the Concordia community, Clarence’s painful memories of being bullied and isolated gradually faded into the past. The lessons he learned during those difficult times enabled him to embrace self-love and acceptance. “I gained confidence and self-esteem by not dwelling on the things that held me back. I realized I had the chance to prove myself to others and help them,” Clarence shared, reflecting on the valuable lessons he learned from his time at Concordia. Additionally, the financial aid provided by Concordia made a significant difference in Clarence’s life. It alleviated the burden of having to constantly ask his mother for money, allowing him to focus on his studies without worrying about meeting his needs. “Thanks to the financial support from Concordia, I no longer have to constantly ask my mother for money. It has relieved me of the stress of obtaining school supplies and meeting other requirements,” Clarence expressed gratefully.

Now approaching his senior high school years, Clarence stands on the brink of graduation with high honors. He proudly shares his achievements with his friends and family, although he still grapples with occasional insecurities and anxieties about his family’s financial situation and his future. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic and resolute in his approach to life. “There will always be problems, but I try to cherish each day and believe that I have the strength to face whatever challenges come my way,” Clarence affirmed. Throughout his journey, one thing remains clear—Clarence has found a safe haven at Concordia, a place where he can express himself and be accepted for who he is. “I have been with Concordia for a very, very long time. I can genuinely say that I have always felt accepted by the people around me, including Ate Hazel, the other individuals who pass through, and even my sponsors. Being a part of Concordia has added a spark into the emptyness I once felt, and it is far better than before,” Clarence concluded.

Clarence Erpres serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating that with resilience, support, and a belief in oneself, anyone can overcome obstacles and find their place in the world. As he continues his educational journey and prepares for the future, Clarence’s story reminds us of the importance of creating inclusive communities and providing support to those facing challenges. Concordia, with its dedication to fostering growth and acceptance, has played an invaluable role in Clarence’s life. With the lessons learned and the unwavering support he has received, Clarence is equipped to face whatever lies ahead, while also making a positive impact on the lives of others.
