A Remarkable Adoption Journey: Lemuel’s Path to a Loving Family

A Serendipitous Meeting on Summer’s Birthday

The Svenssons’ adoption story began when they met Lemuel in Concordia on the day of their first adopted daughter Summer’s eighth birthday. Lemuel was only an infant when he came to Concordia and met his family when he was two years old. Marie reminisces about the fortuitous coincidence, sharing, “We had our son Lemuel on Summer’s birthday.” Thomas adds, “She spent a part of her birthday in Concordia.” Despite the brief encounter, Lemuel’s attachment to his caregivers was evident, making it challenging for him to separate from them. Thomas vividly recalls a touching moment during those initial days: “I remember holding Lemuel, and as he cried, we showed him pictures of Concordia. He pointed to the picture and then to the door.” Saying as if he wants to go back.

Overcoming Adoption Challenges

The adoption process presented unexpected hurdles, testing the Svenssons’ patience and resolve. Marie explains, “We had to navigate Philippine adoption processes. It was quite different from what we expected.” However, their unwavering eagerness to adopt propelled them forward. Marie shares a poignant memory: “While cleaning up the crib we had set up in the room, Summer said, ‘Oh no, it’s for my baby brother or sister. And I was like “but the adoption is taking so long and it was hard to explain that to Summer.'” Their perseverance paid off when Marie received a life-changing call from the adoption center in Norway. Summer vividly remembers the joyful moment: “I remember that day very clearly. We were at the zoo, and it was pouring rain. Mom went away to make a call, and when she came back, I knew something good had happened. I decided to buy a toy for my baby brother, and I gave it to him when we first met.”

Adjusting to a New Environment

In the first year after adoption, Lemuel faced challenges in adapting to his new environment. Although he cherished his newfound parents, he viewed his older sister as a threat. Marie reflects, “Lemuel had trouble adjusting, not in communication, as he was always clear about what he wanted, but in establishing a routine, particularly with Summer. Lemuel loved having Mom and Dad, but having a big sister was initially daunting.” However, Summer demonstrated her love and patience, making efforts to build a bond with her new brother. Marie shares a pivotal moment: “There’s a photo from a trip we took after a year, where they are both laughing, tickling each other, and having fun. For me, that picture symbolizes the turning point when everything started to get better.” Thomas adds, “It was the first time they played like that.”

Thriving and Embracing Individuality

Lemuel’s vibrant personality began to flourish as he grew older. A natural observer and self-learner, he developed a passion for activities such as parkour, basketball, and swimming, often excelling and winning medals. Thomas playfully remarks, “He’s quite the trickster when playing basketball, always adding his own flair.” Injustice bothers him, reflecting his father’s influence. Lemuel’s pursuit of parkour as a sport showcases his determination and agility, resulting in multiple accolades.

A Deep-Rooted Desire to Adopt

Marie and Thomas had always embraced the idea of adoption, even before they got married. Marie’s personal experience with a relative’s adoption journey had a profound impact on her. She shares, “Before getting married, I decided to adopt because of a family story. A close relative couldn’t have children of her own, so they adopted. That inspired me, and I knew I wanted to do the same when my turn came.” Marie and Thomas wholeheartedly embraced their role as parents, emphasizing that there was never anything strange about the love they have for their children. Thomas simply states, “Love knows no difference.”

Lemuel’s adoption journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of love, resilience, and unwavering commitment. The Svensson family’s dedication and patience in overcoming challenges allowed Lemuel to find his place in their hearts and become an integral part of their loving family. As Lemuel continues to thrive, his story inspires others to embrace the beauty of adoption and the profound impact it can have on the lives of all involved.
